The shopping and dining are pretty incredible in Oxford. With nice little local shops, a great wool garment store, stationary shops like nothing you’ll ever see and the Whiskey Shop (stocked with incredible Scotch, much of which you cannot purchase in America) you’ll be lucky to find time to make it to London! Every street is an adventure in Oxford—you’ll always find a new treat in your walks.

For Europe, affordable vacation packages can be difficult to come across. However, they are not impossible. And, even if you can’t find one that is as affordable as, say, Cancun or NYC, they are well worth the experience.

Take Oxford, England for example. Most people wouldn’t think of a college city as a vacation spot and, I have to admit, it wouldn’t necessarily be my first pick either. But, with cheaper hotel prices (and a hostel or two) and only a 30 minute bus ride to London (as well as other England hot spots) it really can’t be beat.

Not to mention… this city is beautiful! Made up of over 40 colleges which collectively make Oxford University, you won’t find much more eclectic and aesthetically pleasing architecture in many places. You can tour the college of Lewis Carol and John Locke: Christ Church College or visit the incredible botanical gardens. Or, how about a visit to the famous Eagle and Child pub, where famous authors J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis met with the other “Inklings” to discuss their work? Furthermore, if you have interest in theater, catch a play while you’re there. Whatever productions that are in progress while you’re there will be sure to entertain!

Remember, Europe is not only made of the big cities. It’s the little ones that you’ll fall in love with. The idiosyncrasies of places like Oxford, Cologne (Germany) or Conwy (Wales) give you a feeling that many larger, mor famous cities can’t. That is not to knock places like London… if you find yourself in England, you have to visit London. But, remember to take in the little cities too.
